CINEMA ITALIANO 2007 FOURTH ANNUAL FESTIVAL
Istituto Italiano di Cultura San Francisco, Friends of Italy Society of Hawai`i, Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre, Ferrari/Maserati of Hawai'i, and Movie Museum present an outstanding array of the latest award winning Italian films from David di Donatello, Golden Globe, and the Cannes Film Festival. These spectacular Italian films will premier at the Honolulu Academy of Arts from Thursday, September 27 through Tuesday, October 2nd.
Six award-winning Italian films from David di Donatello, Golden Glove and the Cannes Film Festival have been selected to bring Italian drama, comedy and romance to Hawai`i residents. Opening the festival on September 27th is Golden Door, the 2007 Italian Oscar nominee; it s a magical and visually arresting tale of early 20th century American immigration. Next Life in the Balance, Lorenzo, a young and ambitious lawyer, proud of his accomplishments is forced through illness to consider what is meaningful in life. Along the Ridge, is life seen through the eyes of Tommi, an eleven-year-old boy whose family relationships are continually tested. While Mafioso according to A.O. Scott, film critic for The New York Times is a revealing portrait of Italian society and an utter blast, happily blending low comedy, high sentiment, neo-realism and farce-almost a film festival unto itself . In When do the Girls Show Up?, life does not really begin until the girls show up and jazz enthusiasts will love the musical score and finally, LOVE takes center stage in Manual of Love, which chronicles the fours phases of love; falling in love, crisis, betrayal and abandonment.
Co-curators of the film festival are Margherita Parrent, Italian Film Festival Chair, Konrad Ng, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the Academy for Creative Media, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, and Gina Maria Caruso, Curator of Film and Media at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
